Single-sitting root canal
Many root canals can be finished in one visit of about an hour to an hour and a half. It depends on the tooth: front teeth with one canal are usually quicker than molars with three or four.
If a tooth is badly infected or swollen, it’s often safer to clean it, place a soothing dressing and finish at a second visit once the infection has settled. We’ll tell you which applies to your tooth before starting.
Re-root canal (re-treatment)
Sometimes a tooth that had a root canal years ago becomes painful or infected again, often because of a missed canal, a leaking filling or new decay. Re-treatment removes the old filling material, cleans the canals again and re-seals them.
It’s usually worth trying before considering extraction. We’ll check the tooth with an X-ray and tell you honestly whether re-treatment is likely to succeed.

- Mild tenderness for a few days is normal; simple painkillers usually help.

Do I always need a crown afterwards?
